Dr. Krishna Iyer is one of India’s most respected pediatric cardiac surgeons, renowned for his expertise and dedication to congenital heart surgery.
He has over 46 years of experience in the field of cardiac surgery, with a focus on treating heart defects in infants, children, and adults.
Dr. Iyer has performed more than 10,000 complex heart surgeries, including arterial switch procedures, TAPVC repairs, Fontan operations, and corrective surgeries for TOF, DORV, and Truncus Arteriosus.
In 1995, he established Northern India’s first dedicated pediatric cardiac care program at Escorts Heart Institute, now Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, setting new standards in cardiac care across South East Asia.
He pioneered the rapid two-stage arterial switch and double-switch operations in India, significantly advancing neonatal heart surgery in the country.
His special interests include neonatal cardiac surgery, managing malnourished children with heart disease, late presenters of congenital conditions, and promoting cost-effective cardiac care for children in developing nations.
Dr. Iyer received advanced training under the legendary Dr. R.B.B. Mee at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne in 1989.
He previously served as Additional Professor in the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at AIIMS, New Delhi, before founding the pediatric cardiac division at Escorts.
He actively contributes to charitable programs like Rotary International’s ‘Gift of Life’, offering free heart surgeries to underprivileged children.
Dr. Iyer has been honored with numerous awards, including the Institute Gold Medal for Best Graduate, Hira Lal Gold Medal, Pfizer Postgraduate Award, and the Doppler Award for the best paper in Washington D.C., 1994.
He was named a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International in recognition of his humanitarian service.
